Capstone Experience: dunnhumby Team

This semester our Capstone team is thrilled and excited to be working on a project for dunnhumbyUSA. As a “customer science” company, dunnhumby strives to see what, when, and where people are buying products. dunnhumby was started in 1989 by husband and wife Edwina Dunn and Clive Humby. Their mission is to help retailers and brands analyze data in order to improve customer experiences and build loyalty.

The dunnhumby CapEx team is creating a coupon app prototype for Android devices to further dunnhumby’s view into consumer purchases while providing incentives to strengthen brand loyalty. This app allows the user to scan products they are purchasing with their phones which will create a coupon on the device dynamically, meaning that the coupon is specially created based on that person’s purchasing habits. The user can then take their phone to the store register and scan the coupons from their phone, providing discounts like a paper coupon, but without having to cut out anything or carry around a card. A very cool and unique feature of the app is the ability to utilize Mobeam technology on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Mobeam transmits the coupon code by pulsing an infrared light on the front of the phone. This further ensures the ease of use in scanning the coupons at the register. The coupon app will also provide a layer of customer safety and health features, warning the user if a certain product contains something that he or she is allergic to, and also inform the user of any nutritional information about a product.

While using the app, the data about the products scanned and coupons redeemed is collected by dunnhumby. dunnhumby can use this data to show product manufacturers who is buying their products, where they are buying them, and how often. Our prototype will demonstrate the different kinds of data able to be captured by dunnhumby, and the different features that can exist within the app to keep users engaged and make the experience a win-win situation for consumers and dunnhumby.
