Toastmasters: An Introduction

Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. By regularly giving speeches, gaining feedback, leading teams and guiding others to achieve their goals in a supportive atmosphere, leaders emerge from the Toastmasters program. We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.

We have had stellar participation so far. We just had our third meeting, with 30 students in attendance. A bulk of the meeting is comprised of “Table Topics”. Table Topics is a session of one minute impromptu speeches; thinking and speaking on the fly. Someone is asked a random question such as “What makes you, you?” or “What is your favorite color and why?” It helps students formulate what they’re saying before they say it, and communicate their thoughts to a group of people. We have begun to slip in possible interview questions such as “Tell us about a time when you had to overcome adversity on a project with a group member”. We believe this is great interview preparation while simultaneously improving public speaking. It puts the student on the spot, but a comfortable atmosphere allows them to develop without hesitation. Each student gets better at every meeting, it is easy to see. There is a dedicated group of students that have been coming to each meeting. Their confidence is improving, you can tell by their non-verbal communication. You can tell by the way they walk in the room. That’s what ToastMasters does for you, and what it’s doing to the dedicated students of UA MIS.
