While you are at work, do your work, and give it your full attention and effort. Complete assigned tasks with efficiency, accuracy, and expediency. Keep interruptions you can control to a minimum. For example, instead of wasting time grumbling about how much you have to do, just dig in and start working. The time you spend complaining is better spent working on the task at hand. Likewise, avoid complainers or let them know you are busy working. Tactfully encourage them to use their time working.
Periodically assess your performance and how well you complete your tasks to determine if there is a way to increase your productivity or perhaps eliminate nonessential or redundant steps. Track where your
time is spent and employ appropriate time management techniques.
Observe others who do similar jobs and compare your productivity to theirs. Is there a way to measure your output against workers in similar jobs? Do you accomplish more than they do? Are you as accurate as they are? Remember, your goal should be to surpass your supervisor’s expectations, and one way you do that is by exceeding other employees’ output. Pay particular attention to successful coworkers and supervisors. How do they meet their goals, quotas, and deadlines? Can you follow their example? What can you learn from them?
There will be days you may feel tired, irritable, or bored. The professional moves past these feelings to continue performing his job to the best of his ability.
In any economic climate you need to make yourself as useful as possible and avoid giving the impression you are a complainer. You may even be called on to pick up additional work if coworkers are laid off
or to reduce your hours and wages to prevent downsizing at your company.
